The simultaneous interpretation booth is much more than a physical space for the interpreter. It determines the working conditions that directly affect the accuracy and consistency of interpretation over an event of 6 to 8 hours.
An interpreter working without a booth — or in a booth without adequate acoustic insulation — suffers from event audio leaking into their microphone, ambient noise that makes it hard to hear the speaker and compromised concentration. The result is a drop in accuracy, especially in specialized technical vocabulary, exactly when terminological rigor is most needed.
The ISO 4043 standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization specifically for simultaneous interpretation booths, defines the minimum parameters that ensure professional working conditions. lingo uses exclusively booths that meet this standard at all formal events.
The ISO 4043 booth is built from modular tempered glass panels and an aluminum frame. The 30-decibel acoustic insulation is enough for the interpreter to hear only the speaker's audio via the headset — without contamination from the event's sound. Forced ventilation keeps the interior temperature comfortable even in warm rooms, without generating audible noise in the microphone.
Each module comfortably holds two interpreters with an individual console, space for reference material and adjustable interior lighting. The front glass provides full visibility of the stage and the presentation screens — essential for the interpreter to follow the visual context of the speech.
For multilingual events, lingo provides multiple booths — one per language pair — positioned side by side or in a configuration that optimizes the visibility of each interpreter team. The relay system, when needed, is integrated between the consoles of the different booths.
Not every event requires the full structure of an ISO booth. For board meetings, due diligence, corporate training and arbitrations with up to 80 participants, the portable booth offers adequate acoustic insulation with much faster installation and a smaller footprint.
lingo's portable booth sets up in approximately 30 minutes, without tools, and occupies an area of approximately 0.8m × 0.8m. It is built from modular acoustic panels with 15 to 20 decibels of insulation — enough for meetings in air-conditioned corporate rooms.
International bodies such as the UN, UNESCO, WHO, WTO and AIIC (International Association of Conference Interpreters) require that all events with simultaneous interpretation use booths that meet the ISO 4043 standard. For corporate events involving representatives of these bodies, the ISO booth is not optional.
Medical and pharmaceutical congresses often have similar recommendations — the quality of interpretation in terms of oncology, pharmacology or surgical procedures directly affects the understanding of health information. International arbitration chambers and high-level legal events also specify ISO 4043 in their organizing requirements.
For general corporate events — launches, training, due diligence — the ISO requirement is less frequent, but lingo recommends the ISO model whenever the event lasts more than 4 continuous hours or the number of participants exceeds 100. The superior working conditions are directly reflected in the quality of interpretation throughout the event.

lingo's AI works with the same equipment — digital transmitter, receivers and booth. The difference is that the interpreter is replaced by the AI model trained on the vocabulary of your event's sector. For recurring events or those with standardized technical vocabulary, it can be an economical alternative with a quote generated in 60 seconds. lingo's AI is trained on 21 years of live simultaneous interpretations — with vocabulary from 24 sectors and 222 subsectors. Credits that do not expire, activation in 24h and an automatic quote generated in 60 seconds.
Simulate lingo AI quote →The choice between an ISO booth and a portable booth is not a matter of preference, but of three variables: the duration of the event, the number of participants and the available space. For long events, over 4 continuous hours, or with more than 100 people, the ISO booth is the standard recommendation, because it offers the acoustic insulation, ventilation and visibility that sustain the interpreter's accuracy throughout the day. For board meetings, due diligence, training and arbitrations of up to 80 people, the portable booth is usually sufficient and much more agile.
When the event has intermediate characteristics, such as a 5-hour meeting with 60 people, lingo assesses the venue and the ambient noise before deciding. A quiet, air-conditioned corporate room handles the portable well; a hotel ballroom with sound from other events next door calls for the ISO.
The number of languages must also be considered. Each language pair requires a booth, and events with three or more target languages take up considerable space. In those cases, the portable booth, which occupies a smaller area, can make possible a configuration that would not fit with ISO modules.
Visibility is the main rule. The interpreter needs to see the speaker, the projection screen and, when there is one, the audience. The booth should be placed at the side or back of the room, with the front glass facing the stage, and with no pillars, structures or standing people blocking the line of sight.
Other points weigh on the decision: a nearby power outlet, access for the technical operator, the distance to the sound desk and the circulation of participants. The booth must not block emergency exits or evacuation corridors. In rooms with very strong air conditioning, it is best to avoid placing the booth directly under the air outlet, because the noise can leak into the microphone.
At events with two or more languages, the booths sit side by side, so that each team has a view of the stage. When relay is needed, in which one booth interprets from another, the consoles are integrated, and the teams agree on the workflow in advance.
The portable booth sets up in about 30 minutes, without tools. The ISO booth requires 2 to 3 hours and a technical team, so setup normally takes place the day before or the morning of the event, depending on venue access hours. These times are part of the planning, and lingo agrees with the venue on the entry and exit window.
After setup, the technical operator tests the audio end to end: the speaker's signal reaches the interpreter's headset, the interpreter's voice reaches the transmitter, and the participants' receivers play the correct channel. The interpreter confirms comfort of use, adjusts the volume and tests the communication system with the operator.
At the end of the event, dismantling and removal are carried out by the lingo team, which also checks the condition of the booths and equipment. Delivery, setup, dismantling and technical support are included in the quote.
A simultaneous interpreter works in 20 to 30 minute shifts, in a pair with a colleague. The one on the microphone interprets; the other follows the speech, notes numbers and difficult terms and helps when needed. The booth must accommodate both comfortably, with room for reference material, water and adjustable light.
Each individual console gives the interpreter control over volume, microphone muting and, in booths with relay, selection of the source channel. It is a set of small features that, taken together, reduce fatigue and protect quality.
That is why lingo does not recommend improvising the booth with tables, screens or corners of the hall. The difference in quality between an interpreter in a proper booth and one in an improvised environment is noticeable to the audience, especially after the first hours.
For medium and large events, the technical team visits the venue before the event to define the positioning, check the sound system and identify installation needs. The site visit avoids surprises such as difficult loading access, lack of power near the ideal spot or a ceiling height incompatible with the module.
Even without an in-person visit, the organizer can speed up planning by sending the floor plan or photos of the room, the access time, the dimensions of the freight elevator, the number of languages and the location of the sound desk. With this information, the quote is accurate and setup happens within the expected time.
The quote is generated in 60 seconds, and the quote amount is the final amount on the invoice.
For a standard ISO module: 1.6m × 1.2m with side access of at least 0.6m. For two modules side by side: 3.2m × 1.2m. lingo carries out a technical survey of the space and defines the ideal positioning.
Yes. lingo rents booths and equipment with or without a lingo interpreter. For events where the client already has their own human interpreter, lingo provides the booth, the equipment and the technical operator.
For medium and large events, yes. The technical team visits the venue beforehand to define positioning, check the sound system and identify specific installation needs.
