Why lingo for NGOs and the Third Sector

01

COP30 — Belém, November 2025

Brazil hosted COP30 in Belém — 195+ countries, 30,000+ participants. NGOs, companies and organizations take part in negotiating sessions, panels and side events. lingo interprets for organizations that need communication in English, French and Spanish.

02

Brazil as a recipient of international cooperation

The Gates, Ford, Rockefeller and Lemann foundations, the USAID, GIZ, JICA and AFD agencies, and organizations such as UNDP, UNICEF and the IDB operate in Brazil with projects that require interpretation in project meetings, evaluation missions and impact reports.

03

Social impact vocabulary as professional language

Theory of Change, M&E, impact KPIs, RCT, ESG reporting, SROI — the third sector has its own vocabulary, which lingo masters in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

How an interpreted project meeting works

In project meetings between a Brazilian NGO and a foreign funder, almost all of the time is spent on documents: the proposal, the logical framework, the monitoring and evaluation plan, the risk matrix and the progress reports. The interpreter can only follow that conversation by having read those documents beforehand. For that reason, lingo asks the organizer for the project material in advance and builds a glossary with the acronyms, program names and indicators in use.

In grantee reviews, the rhythm is question and answer, with a review of impact KPIs, budget execution and adaptive management. If the meeting is in person and small, portable equipment solves it. If the funder's team is in another country, the interpretation channel can be set up on the videoconferencing platform. The remote simultaneous interpretation page explains how it works.

Evaluation missions and field visits

Evaluation missions by agencies and organizations such as USAID, IDB and the World Bank combine formal meetings with field visits and interviews with beneficiaries. Each moment calls for a format. In meetings held in a room, simultaneous interpretation is the right choice. In interviews and visits to communities, where the group moves around and the conversation is informal, consecutive interpretation or whispered interpretation works better, because they require neither a booth nor infrastructure.

lingo plans the mission agenda together with the responsible team, so that the interpreter knows which meetings are formal and which are in the field. In interviews with beneficiaries, register matters as much as accuracy: the interpreter must respect the vocabulary of the people interviewed, without turning it into technical project language.

Multilateral events and side events

Multilateral events such as COP30, in Belém, bring together delegations from more than 195 countries. At side events, NGOs and companies present carbon, Amazon and climate finance projects to audiences of several languages. English, French and Spanish are the most common working languages, and the vocabulary changes fast: REDD+, Article 6, ITMOs, adaptation and mitigation. lingo prepares the glossary for each session with the material sent by the organizer.

For events of international organizations, see also the public sector and multilateral page and the sanitation and environment page.

Confidentiality, preparation and hiring

Reports from human rights organizations and project evaluations deal with sensitive information. lingo signs an NDA, valid for 5 years, before receiving any material. For recurring mandates, the glossary accumulates from one session to the next, which reduces preparation time and increases accuracy over the course of the project.

To hire, state the date, language pair, modality and number of participants in the automatic quote. The quote amount is the final invoice amount. The page on how much simultaneous interpretation costs in SP explains the price factors.

How to hire — quote in 60 seconds

Contact us via WhatsApp (+55 11 97534-6423) or through the calculator at lingo.com.br/orcamento. State the date, language pair, format (RSI or in-person UHF) and number of participants. lingo replies with a complete proposal in 60 seconds — confirmed interpreter, equipment (if in person), technical operator and logistics included, with no hidden items.

Alex Barros requests the event deck and agenda 48 hours in advance to prepare the technical glossary specific to the event — proprietary company terms, industry acronyms, product names and internal metrics that do not appear in dictionaries. For recurring engagements, the glossary accumulates session after session. After 12 months of monthly boards, the interpreter knows the company's internal vocabulary as well as any senior executive.

For RSI (Zoom, Teams, Meet, Webex): setup 30 minutes before with the host, no physical equipment, no freight cost. For in-person (UHF): installation 60–90 minutes before, portable soundproof booth, on-site technical operator. For hybrid: both formats in parallel. Documented portfolio with verifiable engagements

lingo has operated exclusively in the premium corporate market for 21 years. There are no academic, government, religious or entertainment events in the portfolio. That exclusive specialization produced a depth of vocabulary that generalist interpreters cannot replicate: 2,233 terms across 24 sectors and 16 language pairs, accumulated in real engagements — not in theoretical study.

Documented cases with named clients and verifiable contexts: XP Investimentos IPO on NASDAQ (US$14.9B, 2019), CMA CGM × Santos Brasil (R$6.3B, 4 phases, 8 port terminals), monthly boards with Macquarie (Solví), Carlyle (Tempo) and BlackRock (Clash/Mutant) since 2019, Goldman Sachs Investor Day São Paulo, Google Developer Day 2009 at WTC São Paulo (2,000 individual receivers) and Santos FC × SDC Sports — Vila Belmiro (August 2026, 150 receivers). No PE fund with fiduciary obligations to its LPs would rehire an interpreter who delivers below expectations. Recurring engagements are the only reliable credential in this profession.
