What changed with hybrid events

Before 2020, simultaneous interpretation was almost exclusively in person. The interpreter was in the booth, the participants in the auditorium, the technician next to the transmitter. The only variables were the number of languages and the number of people.

Hybrid events created a new layer of technical complexity. Today, a single event can have 200 people in person in São Paulo, 150 connected via Zoom from other cities in Brazil and 50 in London via Teams — and all of them need to hear the interpretation in the language of their choice, in real time, with no noticeable delay between the groups.

lingo developed the technical process to cover all of these formats. The interpreter in the booth — or remote, working from São Paulo — interprets in real time. The audio goes simultaneously to two channels: the RF transmitter that feeds the in-person participants' receivers, and the digital platform's interpretation channel that feeds the remote participants. Both groups hear at the same time, with no noticeable difference in experience.

Technical flow of a hybrid session

Understanding the technical flow helps the organizer identify which elements need to be prepared before the event. In a hybrid session with Portuguese as the event language and English as the interpretation language:

The speaker talks in Portuguese on stage or via camera (if remote). The audio reaches the interpreter's console in the booth through the event's sound system or through the digital platform. The interpreter converts it into English in real time. The English audio is sent to two simultaneous destinations: the digital RF transmitter (for the in-person participants' receivers who selected the English channel) and the platform's interpretation channel (for the remote participants who activated English in the app).

For this flow to work smoothly, three technical elements need to be aligned: the line output of the event's sound system (so the interpreter hears the speaker with good quality), the integration with the digital platform (configuring the interpretation channel before the start) and the synchronization of the delay between the two systems so that in-person and remote attendees hear with minimal difference.

Supported platforms in 2026

Each digital platform takes a different approach to simultaneous interpretation. Some have a native function — the user activates the interpretation channel directly in the app. Others require additional configuration by lingo.

Zoom has the most robust native simultaneous interpretation function: the host sets up the language pairs, assigns the interpreters by email and participants activate the interpretation channel with two clicks. It is the most widely used platform at bilingual corporate events and the one that offers the best experience for remote participants.

Microsoft Teams has had native simultaneous interpretation since 2023, but with some limitations on the number of simultaneous languages. For events with 2 to 3 languages, it works well. For events with more languages, lingo uses a complementary solution.

Webex also has native interpretation, with an interface similar to Zoom. Google Meet and StreamYard do not have a native interpretation function, but lingo developed an integration via external audio that delivers a more affordable cost for standardized content at events where those platforms are mandatory.

Technical challenges and how lingo solves them

The main challenge of hybrid events with interpretation is not the interpretation itself — it is the synchronization of the multiple audio systems. Hybrid events often have: the venue's PA system, the videoconferencing platform, the interpreter's capture system and, sometimes, a separate recording system. Each of these systems introduces a different delay, and if they are not calibrated together, remote participants hear the speaker seconds apart from those in person — creating confusion and echo in the Q&A session.

lingo's sound technician arrives 2 to 3 hours before the start of the event specifically to calibrate these systems together. The RF transmitter's delay is adjusted to match the digital platform's delay, so that in-person and remote attendees hear with a difference of less than 0.5 seconds — imperceptible in practice.

lingo AI — artificial intelligence interpretation

For corporate webinars, online training and recurring hybrid events, lingo's AI is especially advantageous. It integrates with the same platforms as lingo's Human Interpreter — Zoom, Teams, Webex — with the difference that credits do not expire and can be used across multiple events throughout the year. lingo's AI is trained on 21 years of live simultaneous interpretations — with vocabulary from 24 sectors and 222 subsectors. Credits that do not expire, activation in 24h and an automatic quote generated in 60 seconds.

Audio planning at hybrid events

Audio is the most critical point of a hybrid event. The interpreter needs a clean feed of the speaker, and the remote audience needs a separate channel for the interpretation. The ideal is to have a mixing desk feeding three destinations: the venue's sound system, the interpreter's booth and the stream. When the audio is mixed together, echo, feedback and delay between the audiences appear.

The recommendation is to agree with the event's production company on a simple audio plan: one microphone per speaker, a dedicated output for the interpretation and a controlled return input to avoid feedback. lingo takes part in the technical conversation to adapt the plan to the venue and the chosen platform.

Team and roles at a hybrid event

A well-run hybrid event usually has four roles: the producer, who looks after the content and the schedule; the venue's audio and video operator; lingo's technical operator, who looks after the interpretation and the UHF signal; and the digital platform host, who manages the language channels and the remote participants. Each one knows what they do, and communication among them keeps problems from piling up.

The interpreter, in the booth or remote, concentrates on the interpretation. lingo's technical operator monitors the signal and resolves failures, and the host looks after the online participants. This simple division preserves quality for both audiences.

Questions, chat and interaction between audiences

Interaction between the in-person and remote audiences is one of the challenges of hybrid events. Questions via chat, polls and raised hands need to be organized by a moderator, who reads them in the event language for the interpreter. When a question arrives in another language, the moderator can read it and the interpreter converts it for both audiences.

Setting clear rules at the start helps: how to ask questions, who speaks first, how to introduce yourself. This reduces overlapping voices and improves the experience of those listening through the receiver or the app.

Tests and technical rehearsal

A technical rehearsal before the event is highly recommended. It checks the room audio, the flow to the booth, the language channel configuration on the platform, the venue's internet and the contingency plan. At large events, it is worth repeating the rehearsal on the day, a few hours before the opening.

Simple contingencies also help: a second internet path, backup power and a standby interpreter connected. lingo advises the organizer on what to reinforce according to the size and criticality of the event.

Costs of a hybrid event

The cost of a hybrid event takes into account the number of languages, the duration, the in-person equipment, the technical operator and the platform integration. In general, hybrid costs more than purely in-person or purely remote, because it combines the two, but it avoids duplicating the interpreter team: the same professional serves both audiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to have 100% remote hybrid interpretation — with no one on site?

Yes. The interpreter works from São Paulo, the speaker and the audience are in any location, and all delivery happens through the digital platform. lingo offers this format to clients across Brazil.

How do remote participants activate the interpretation channel in Zoom?

In Zoom, the participant clicks the globe icon in the bottom bar and selects the desired language. lingo provides a one-page visual guide sent before the event to all remote participants.

What is the impact of the delay between in-person and remote attendees?

With proper calibration, the delay between the two groups stays below 0.5 seconds — imperceptible to the participant. lingo performs this calibration as a standard part of setting up the system.

How does the quote work for hybrid events?

Fill in the form stating whether the event is hybrid, the platforms used, the number of languages and the proportion of in-person and remote participants. The system generates the quote and sends the PDF by email and WhatsApp after you complete it.
